The DeWint House

In the beautiful surroundings of Tappan, New York, lies the historic DeWint House. This is an historic site, steeped American and Masonic history. Built by Daniel DeClark, in 1700, the DeWint house is among the oldest surviving structures in Rockland County . The home exhibits one of the finest remaining examples of Hudson Valley Colonial sandstone architecture.

In August of 1780, President George Washington was in the area on business when he was invited to stay at the DeWint's family home. Nearly a month later Brother Washington returned for another stay during the the trial and subsequent hanging of the British spy, Major John Andr. Over the next three years, Washington along with his key staff and dignitaries would visit twice more. This gave rise to the nickname of the home, Washington's Headquarters, Tappan

During the Depression, The Grand Master of New York Masons at the time, Charles H. Johnson, arranged for the purchase and preservation of the home and it's surrounding land. Subsequently, Since 1932, the DeWint House has since been open to the public free of charge.
